It’s a question of biochemistry. Knowing this doesn’t diminish the experience of feeling happy!

Happiness is related to the chemical balance in your brain and body. It’s easier to get the right balance of chemicals when you’re healthy, have exercised, are well rested, and are well fed. Of course you can still feel happy when you’re stressed or hungry, and things that make you happy or people you are happy to be near can even help you overcome bad conditions.
