Very good question. They are focused mainly on hands-on research — actually doing experiments and/or running calculations. However, they also play a very important role in day-to-day training of PhD students and also spend quite a bot of their time writing drafts of papers (and applications for research fellowships). Quite a few postdocs also get involved with presenting their work to the general public via forums like I’m A Scientist…!
